Three bodies found in northern Mexico where Perth brothers went missing
Sat, 04 May 2024 05:13:14 GMT
Siblings Callum and Jake Robinson and US citizen Jack Carter Rhoad were travelling on a surfing holiday when they were reported missing
Three bodies have been found in an area of northern Mexico where two Australian brothers and an American friend are missing.
Perth siblings Callum and Jake Robinson, both in their 30s, were travelling in the region on a surfing holiday, with their friend Jack Carter Rhoad, a US citizen. The trio was reported missing when they failed to check into pre-arranged accommodation near the city of Ensenada last weekend.

It is a recent tradition that our adult children spend the night back at home with us the day before they travel anywhere far away. As parents we may have a diminishing relevance in their lives, but we remain very handy for the airport.
I hear the middle one pull the front door shut behind him at 5.45am on Saturday morning, off on a week-long business trip. When I next wake up itâs almost 9am, and the house seems emptier than ever.

Readers were inspired by Hilary Bradtâs experiences and recall their own
As I recuperated from surgery, my spirits were much lifted by the memories evoked by Hilary Bradtâs article (Confessions of an 82-year-old hitchhiker, 27 April).
As a hitchhiker in the 1960s and early 70s, I, like Bradt, experienced wholly positive interactions with those willing to offer a lift: interesting conversations over the course of a few miles, company over a shared meal in otherwise soulless service stations, occasional overnight hospitality with the driverâs family, and even offers to set up my first lift of the next day with a âfriend of a friendâ who was heading in my direction.

City, who have won one WSL title, in 2016, host Arsenal at the Joie Stadium on Sunday before playing Aston Villa away in their final game. Chelsea, who on Friday announced that Maren Mjelde would leave at the end of the season, welcome relegated Bristol City to Kingsmeadow and play Tottenham away before travelling to Old Trafford to face the team they lost 2-1 to in the FA Cup semi-final last month: Manchester United.

The repeated failure of the new Co-op live venue to open in Manchester has led to shows being cancelled at the last moment, gigs rescheduled, and has caused huge inconvenience to people who had booked non-refundable travel and hotels to enjoy events they had been looking forward to.
It has, of course, though, allowed the British public to also enjoy one of its greatest pastimes â hilarious schadenfreude on social media. Not least because its general manager, Gary Roden, was forced to resign over the issues, not long after he hadnât exactly endeared himself to organisations such as the Music Venue Trust by suggesting that many grassroots music venues are often âpoorly runâ and that was a factor in the new venue not wanting to take part in a levy scheme to help keep smaller venues open.

The web has become so interwoven with everyday life that it is easy to forget what an extraordinary accomplishment and treasure it is. In just a few decades, much of human knowledge has been collectively written up and made available to anyone with an internet connection.
But all of this is coming to an end. The advent of AI threatens to destroy the complex online ecosystem that allows writers, artists, and other creators to reach human audiences.
To understand why, you must understand publishing. Its core task is to connect writers to an audience. Publishers work as gatekeepers, filtering candidates and then amplifying the chosen ones. Hoping to be selected, writers shape their work in various ways. This article might be written very differently in an academic publication, for example, and publishing it here entailed pitching an editor, revising multiple drafts for style and focus, and so on...

Tory council representation has imploded, but Labourâs gains have not been seismic. These charts show what this may signal for a general election
Conservative representation has collapsed to its lowest level since 1998 in the areas that voted in Thursdayâs local elections, according to a Guardian analysis.
The Tories now control 19% of seats in the 98 council areas that had announced results by 20:40 on 3 May â their lowest level since Labourâs Tony Blair swept to power in the late 1990s.

Are you, like me, struggling to get a handle on the current governmentâs approach to empathy? It increasingly seems to be a commodity that many Conservative MPs believe should be available to Conservative MPs only. A few weeks ago the chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, described William Wragg â fellow Tory MP and then-chair of the public administration and constitutional affairs committee â as âcourageousâ. By way of a reminder, âcourageousâ is the sort of word we would typically reserve for people whoâve singlehandedly held a bridge for the Allies against the Germans despite being wounded/posted a picture on social media of themselves without makeup; whereas Mr Wragg had simply shared MPsâ private phone numbers with a blackmailer in the current security environment. Is that brave? If it is, can the no-makeup girls please get a VC?
Further bravery seems to have been on show during yesterdayâs local elections, which took place under electoral law changed by the Tories in 2022. All voters are now required to present an approved form of photo ID, which even Jacob Rees-Mogg last year implied was an attempt to âgerrymanderâ and âupset a system that worked perfectly wellâ. Flash-forward to the eve of this weekâs polls, and the Ipswich MP Tom Hunt â who, naturally, voted in favour of voter ID â could be found informing a WhatsApp group of local party members that it âturns out I have no appropriate ID to vote tomorrowâ, and requesting someone to âdo the honoursâ and assist him in getting an emergency proxy vote. Unclear which lucky local did âthe honoursâ, but Ipswich Labour used a screenshot of his APB in their own ad to remind people that they need voter ID, warning: âDonât be like Tom.â

Spread of Tory losses leads former minister to say thereâs âno such thing as a safe seat any moreâ
The Conservatives are facing one of their worst local election results in 40 years, with striking Labour gains across England and Wales in key battlegrounds they need to secure victory at the general election.
The spread of the Conservative losses led one former minister to claim there was âno such thing really as a safe Tory seat any moreâ, but the prime minister appeared committed to clinging on until polling day, with rebels in his own party lacking the support to oust him.
Continue reading...These were intensely domestic polls. But it was foreign affairs that caused Sir Keir Starmer trouble
The results from local elections across England suggest that the Tories are on course to lose power to Labour when voters elect a new parliament. Sir John Curtice, the eminent pollster, set the tone by telling the BBC that he was âlooking at one of the worst, if not the worst, Conservative performances in local government elections for the last 40 yearsâ. The fault ultimately lies with Rishi Sunak, the prime minister. He conceded that the results were disappointing. That seemed an understatement when the Tories were losing half the council seats they were trying to defend.
Voters have stopped listening to the Conservatives. The public is fed up with rising bills that the government did not do enough to insulate them from. The shabby state of the public realm is offensive to most people. Mr Sunak might point to the re-election of Ben Houchen as Tees Valley mayor as proof that Conservatives could defy the odds. But if the swing to Labour was replicated in Tees Valley parliamentary constituencies at a general election, Sir Keir Starmer would win them all.

It was not an opinion poll. These were local elections about local issues. The results tell you only about where we are now, not where we might be come the autumn, or whenever it is that Rishi Sunak finally submits himself to the judgment of the country.
You know all the caveats, to which we can add one more: some of the biggest results, namely the mayoral contests in London, Manchester and the West Midlands, wonât come until Saturday. And yet, taken together, the votes cast on Thursday form an increasingly clear picture. It is a bleak one for the Conservatives â while for Labour it contains both cheer and a perhaps unexpected warning.

Unlike Boris Johnson, did you remember to take ID when you went to vote yesterday? Did you remember to take the right kind? Or, like one in seven Britons, did you have no idea you needed ID to vote? Or, like at least 2 million Britons, did you have no acceptable voter ID at all?
Until last year, when the 2022 Elections Act came into effect, British elections were free of these questions. For centuries, despite the slow, sometimes hugely contentious expansion of the electorate, and the acrimonious and distrustful character of our politics, voters were not required to produce documents in polling stations to prove who they were. This country did not believe in identity cards, many of our politicians proudly told us â particularly Tories. As the then shadow home secretary, Chris Grayling, put it in 2009, shortly before his party returned to power: âID cards ⌠are both an affront to British liberty and will have no place in a Conservative Britain. Readers on the governmentâs plans to move away from financial support for those with mental health conditions given through personal independence payment
Perhaps we shouldnât be surprised that the government has continued to attack âmental health cultureâ (Mentally ill people being used as âpolitical footballâ, campaigners say, 29 April). The publication of its disability green paper, in which the government says it wants to move away from financial support for those with mental health conditions given through personal independence payment (Pip), is greatly concerning. It comes after the prime minister labelled the UK as being amid a âsicknote cultureâ and said that society shouldnât be âover-medicalising the everyday challenges and worries of lifeâ by diagnosing them as mental health conditions.
Such language is outdated and fails to promote open discussions about mental health or encourage those in need to seek expert advice. We must not minimise the mental health challenges that people face every day. Everyone living with a mental health condition deserves support. This includes gaining financial security, and Pip is therefore a vital lifeline for those who rely on it.

Hereâs what happened. Yesterday afternoon, with Ronnie leading by six frames to five, he potted a black ball. When it was returned to its spot, it should have obstructed his next red ball, making it trickier for him to progress. But there was a tiny divot on the table, and the black ball wobbled ever so slightly from its spot, making access to the red simple. Ronnie wasnât having any of it. He asked the ref time and again to replace the black to make it more difficult for him. But the black wasnât having any of it either, and kept bobbling away.

In general, Canva is an excellent tool for those who need simple images for projects. If you are a graphic designer with experience, you will find Canvaâs platform lacking in customization and advanced features â particularly vectors. But if you have little design experience, you will find Canva easier to use than advanced graphic design tools like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator for most projects.
